Thailand Railways Baggage Policy

Overview

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) offers generous baggage allowances to ensure a comfortable journey for all passengers. While specific weight limits are outlined, enforcement is generally lenient. However, passengers are encouraged to adhere to the guidelines for safety and convenience.

Hand Luggage

Passengers are permitted to carry hand luggage onboard, with allowances varying by class:

Allowed Items

• Handbags
• Backpacks
• Small suitcases
• Personal items such as laptops, books, or baby products

Prohibited Items

• Sharp objects like knives and scissors
• Live animals without prior approval
• Strong-smelling items or foods

Checked Baggage

SRT does not offer traditional checked baggage services. However, oversized or heavy items can be transported via the freight carriage for an additional fee. Passengers must purchase a cargo ticket for such items and ensure they are properly packed and labeled.

Oversized Items

Items such as bicycles, motorcycles (up to 150cc), surfboards, or large musical instruments must be transported in the freight carriage. Passengers should:

• Arrive at the station at least 3 hours before departure
• Provide necessary documentation (e.g., proof of ownership for motorcycles)
• Ensure items are securely packed
• Confirm with SRT in advance whether the train service accommodates such items

Storage Options

Storage facilities vary by train class:

• First Class Sleepers: Luggage stored within private compartments
• Second Class Sleepers: Luggage placed on racks beside berths; upper berth passengers may use upper racks
• Second Class Seated: Luggage stored at carriage ends or overhead racks
• Third Class: Luggage stored under seats or on overhead racks; passengers should keep belongings within sight

Left Luggage Services

Major stations offer left luggage facilities for temporary storage. Fees are nominal and vary based on storage duration and baggage size. Passengers will receive a receipt, which must be presented when retrieving items.

Lost or Damaged Baggage

In case of lost or damaged baggage, passengers should immediately report to station staff or the baggage service desk. Compensation will be provided in accordance with SRT's policies.
